Palm Procession Prelude to Holy Week
Always magnificent with the backdrop of the palm groves and the clear blue skies, Elche’s Palm Sunday procession took place yesterday, with an estimated attendance of 60,000 people. The traditional entrance of the figure of Jesus Christ, flanked by palm bearers, has the perfect setting in Elche. Local artisans rise to the occasion by creating beautifully plaited and woven palms, many of which win prizes for their craftsmanship and originality. This year, the bearers of the statue of Christ were the Saint Veronica sisterhood.
More processions will take place daily in Elche throughout Holy Week, culminating in the colourful, Alleluia Procession on Easter Sunday.
